Accelerometer and Gyroscope in phone specs - Question 6

edited December 1969 in Smartphones
If you are going through the specifications of a mobile phone and you see Accelerometer and Gyroscope as part of its specs:

1) What does accelerometer do in a phone?
2) How does a phone with both differ from one with just Accelerometer?

First correct answer (in our judgment) gets a N200 Etisalat Recharge PIN. • Having an accelerometer means that the phone can has the ability to measure the relative motion of the phone with respect to the handler or the earth.
Having a gyroscope means that the phone can measure its orientation relative to the earth's gravity.

Having both capabilities gives the phone the ability to run high profile applications like super games, GPS, etc.
 • @spacyzuma your answer though correct is too technical. We want an answer that will explain to an ordinary person in practical terms what an accelerometer and gyroscope do in phones. In other words, if I buy a phone with these features what do I expect?

 • Accelerometer detect crash-strenght G-forces and automatically calls for asistance unless manualy cancelled an it pedomer functionality in nokia sport tracker. It use as a tilt sensor for tagging the orientation to photos taken with the build-in camera.
The difference is that Gyroscope measure or maintain the orientation of a device while Accelerometer measures the linear acceleration of the device. When the phone measurements are combined with the gyroscope measurements, developer can create application that can sense motion on six-axes:up and down, left and right, forward and backward, as well as the roll, pitch and yaw rotation.
 • Accelerometers ensure photographs are presented in the correct way-portrait or landscape-depending on how the phone is held.
Additionally, accelerometers and gyroscopes play a major role in touch screen technology. These two features are solely responsible for automatically rotating the phone's graphics whenever you turn or tilt the phone clockwise or counterclockwise.
 • 1. The accelerometer is used to present landscape or portrait views of the device's screen, based on the way the device is being held, for the purpose of auto image rotation, motion- sensitive mini-games, and for image stabilization when taking still photographs.

2. The integration of the gyroscope has allowed for more accurate recognition of movement within
a 3D space than the previous lone accelerometer within a number of smartphones.
 • All the responses today were okay. However, we were looking for an answer that everyday people will understand. We think biola129 provided the most easy to understand answer. So we have given it to biola129. The N200 Etisalat PIN has been sent to your Twitter account. No need for your details, since you have won before.
