UTME Result Released - What Next
With most UTME candidates for 2013 now aware of their results. It is now the season for fraudsters promising to upgrade UTME result. Although in a corrupt nation like Nigeria all things are possible if you have the money and the correct connection, experience has shown that candidates who 'fall Mugu' to the 'upgrade your result schemes' only endup upgrading the bank accounts of the fraudsters with their score remaining unchanged.
If you have seen your UTME result, what should be on your mind is how to ensure you secure admission with the result you already have rather than upgrading or any such nonsense. If you scored 160 and above in UTME 2013, congratulations you stand a great chance of getting admission in 2013 if you play your cards well. It might not be a university, but you will be in a tertiary institution.
A lot of students fail to gain admission because they and their parents live too long in 'fools paradise', ignoring facts and relying too much on hope and faith. You have to be realistic if you want to gain admission. If your score is poor for the school and/or for your course, you already know. The question is, what are you going to do about it?
Are you going to wait until Post UTME before you make your move? or do you move now? If your score is poor for your favoured institution or course, you should change to one that your score qualifies you for. That is the smart thing to do, delay is dangerous. Alternatively you can go for a pre-degree programme or prepare better for next year's UTME.
Another angle to explore is even if you qualify for admission you may not be guaranteed a place. This is because the number of qualified candidates are more than the available vacancies. For example, according to already released UTME result 738,375 candidates scored 200 and above, while 1,413,162 candidates scored 160 and above. Meanwhile, only about 600,000 vacancies are available.
This means that a lot of qualified candidates will not be getting admission this year because of the scarcity of slots. According to one of the theories of evolution, scarcity leads to survival of the fittest, meaning you will need more than a good score to get admission this year. You may also need to explore your network (the people you know).
For example, can you get yourself into the VC's list, the Governor's list, or Senator's list, etc? When resources are scarce it always helps to have someone who will speak on your behalf (a sponsor). So, choosing an institution where you have clout (influence) can be beneficial to your admission chances in 2013.
