they are used to control the amount of air and fuel that mix in the carburetor.when starting a cold engine a richer mixture of fuel and air is required because it is more difficult for the fuel to vaporize in cold air.to accoun for this the choke is placed in the "choke"position thereby cutting off air flow to the carburetor.The throttle is turned wide open while the choke is shut which creates a vaccum in the carburetor.The vacuum causes more fuel from the main jet in the venturi to be sucked in, making a fuel-rich mixture.When the engine gets started the choke can be set to "run"which allow air in and create a more lean mixture.

A choke is use to regulate the proportion of fuel to air in the carburetor which is necessary for starting up an electrical generator,at the point of start up there is usually less fuel in the carburetor. The choke will block the air to create a suction for fuel to come into the carburetor. <br /><br />It is necessary to Open the choke when starting up the engine especially When the engine is cold because, fuel vaporizes less<br />readily and tends to condense on the walls of the intake manifold, starving the cylinders of fuel and making the engine difficult to start; thus, a richer mixture (more fuel to air) is required to start and run the engine until it warms up. A richer mixture<br />is also easier to ignite. To provide the extra fuel, a choke is typically used; this is a device that restricts the flow of air at<br />the entrance to the carburetor, before the venturi.<br />With this restriction in place, extra vacuum is<br />developed in the carburetor barrel, which pulls extra fuel through the main metering system to supplement the fuel being pulled from the idle and off-idle circuits. This provides the rich mixture<br />required to sustain operation at low engine<br />temperatures.
