The main function is to maintain the batteries at the proper charge level, and protect them from overcharging. <br /><br />It simply monitors the battery voltage and stops it from charging when the battery voltage rises to a certain level thus allowing the batteries to be more fully charged with less stress on the battery, extending battery life. It also prevents reverse-current flow, at night, when solar panels aren’t generating electricity.
