What is the Cloud

edited February 2012 in Cloud Computing
When it comes to computing the cloud is used to describe servers and storage on the internet. In other words, the other side of the internet. Now, the internet has two sides, the client side, which most of us belong to with our client devices like laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc. The other side is the cloud consisting of high speed servers and storage and hosting the websites and online services that we use everyday.

Note that the cloud is not the internet neither is our client devices. The internet is just the network that connect the two sides together. So, the internet gives you access to the cloud.

The cloud is used with Cloud computing which started with the idea of software residing in servers connected to the internet. With cloud computing software will be on the server accessible to any compatible device from anywhere. You do not need to install or maintain software on your device. All the user needs to do is to hookup with the cloud via the internet and access any software. Cloud Computing reduces the cost and pain of software maintenance. But for those of us in Nigeria and Africa, internet cost is still a big issue mitigating against the adoption of cloud computing.

Another aspect of cloud computing is cloud storage. Today you can store music, books, and documents on the internet. Such electronic goods are said to be stored in the cloud and are also called cloud storage. The advantage of cloud storage is that you can access your electronic good from anywhere and from any compatible device.
The Truth is Out There.

 • A cloud can be private or public. A public cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet. A private cloud is a proprietary network or a data center that supplies hosted services to a limited number of people. When a service provider uses public cloud resources to create their private cloud, the result is called a virtual private cloud. Private or public, the goal of cloud computing is to provide easy, scalable access to computing resources and IT services.
