  • VSAT is a satellite ground station. Each point will have a VSAT system communicating with each other via a satellite space station in Geo-synchronous orbit. VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a network that uses a public network like the internet to transmit information in an encrypted and secured way that it feels as if you are using a private network.

Microwave radio links uses microwave to transmit data between two points. While VSAT and VPN can easily offer global coverage, microwave radio links are limited in distance. Microwave radio also require line of sight, which can be difficult to predict as the distance increases.

However, your choice of link is not just dependent on distance, the type of data is also to be considered. For example, Video or broadcast is best done on Microwave link or VSAT. Although Microwave radio is limited in the distance it can travel longer distance with repeater stations.

You have to draw-up the cost implication of each, considering the data that needs to be transmitted and the reliability that is required. However, VPN is great for normal branch to branch communications.
