SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It comprises of all techniques used to increase search traffic to a website. Research has shown that websites that rank high on search engines for any given keyword on the search engine results page (SERP) get most of the traffic for the given keyword. In addition, it has also been shown that websites that rank high on search engines have similar characteristics. These characteristics are also called SEO best practices or search engine ranking factors.

So, SEO is about refining a website to conform with these SEO best practices. It is based on the philosophy that if you emulate success, you too will become successful.

SEO starts by probing a website to see how it implements the search engine ranking factors. Then using the discovery, the website is better optimised to rank better. There are different aspects of SEO some internal while others are external. Internal SEO ranking factors are implemented on the website and are more in control of the search engine optimiser, while external SEO ranking factors are implemented outside the website.

More about SEO and boosting traffic
