  • According to wikipedia, a Jet engine is a reaction engine that discharges a fast moving jet of fluid to generate thrust by jet propulsion and in accordance with Newton's laws of motion. A rocket engine is a jet engine that uses only propellant mass for forming its high speed propulsive jet. Rocket engines are reaction engines and obtain thrust in accordance with Newton's third law.<br /><br />Thus, the primary difference is that the Jet engine carries only its fuel and takes in a air (oxygen) before combustion, while the Rocket Engine carries both fuel and oxygen (or combustible material).<br /><br />For space exploration, the better option is undoubtedly the Rocket Engine. This is because most of space is a vacuum and there would be no oxygen for combustion.

  • Well, to start with, a rocket creates thrust by expelling combusted fuel out the back of an opening in the tank or fuel container. The thrust is created by the chemical reaction you might call an explosion. A jet engine uses fans and multiple levels of chambers to compress air which it sucks in the front and blows out the back with greater force.
